Il debutto nel lungometraggio della regista Alix Delaporte, vincitrice nel 2006 di un Leone d’oro con il cortometraggio "Comment on freine dans una descente?", è una storia d’amore e disperazione tra due individui segnati dalla solitudine e costretti a mettersi in gioco al di là delle iniziali intenzioni. Una vicenda fatta di attese, conflitti, separazioni e lenti riavvicinamenti.

Sinossi: La ribelle Angèle cerca un marito per convincere il giudice dei minori a restituirle il figlio, Tony una donna da amare veramente. Lei corre veloce, lui assapora il piacere di imparare a conoscersi. Due caratteri opposti, chiusi, sempre sull’orlo dello scontro verbale e addirittura fisico. Eppure in grado con il tempo di imparare a comprendersi. Un uomo e una donna ricchi di profonda umanità, lacerati da un lutto - la lontananza del figlio, la morte del padre - che cercano disperatamente di superare aggrappandosi l’uno all’altra.
La regista cattura il loro avvicinamento rivelando piccoli gesti di apertura verso l’altro, sorrisi appena accennati, improvvise timidezze. Ma "Angèle et Tony" non è solo il racconto di un amore, è anche il ritratto di una zona della Francia, la Bassa Normandia legata alla pesca, che paga pesantemente la crisi economica. Le esistenze quotidiane dei protagonisti sono in questo senso tutt’uno con il contesto sociale che è parte integrante e non meno fondamentale della storia. Così se il nodo narrativo centrale restano le dinamiche affettive ed esistenziali dei protagonisti, il film non dimentica di mostrare la dura vita dei pescatori costretti a rischiare la denuncia pur di portare avanti le lotte sindacali per aumentare le quote comunitarie del pesce. Una realtà filmata con un linguaggio diretto ed essenziale che inserisce a pieno titolo Angèle et Tony in quella corrente del cinema francese in grado di saldare l’osservazione del reale con l’analisi dei sentimenti.

"Volevo dirigere una storia d’amore. E filmarla fra la gente che conosco bene, i pescatori della Normandia, è stato logico per me. Se fossi nata negli Stati Uniti, avrei girato un film western. I pescatori come cowboy, il mare come le grandi pianure. La natura che impone sentimenti schietti. Poche parole, emozioni primarie, cioè quello che andavo cercando quando ho realizzato questo film".

Alix Delaporte, sceneggiatrice e regista, ha debuttato nel 2003 con il cortometraggio Le Piège. Ha firmato la sceneggiatura di due note serie televisive, Léa Parker (2003) e Plus belle la vie (2004). Come regista ha realizzato il documentario Zinedine Zidane, comme dans un rêve (2001). Nel 2006 il suo Comment on freine dans una descente? ha vinto il Leone d’oro per il miglior cortometraggio alla Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia. Angèle et Tony è il suo primo lungometraggio di finzione.

The full-length debut feature by Alix Delaporte – winner of the Golden Lion for the short film "Comment on freine dans una descente?" in 2006 – is a tale of love and despair of two human beings scarred by solitude and forced to put themselves on the line, beyond their first intentions. A story of waitings, conflicts, separations and slow reconciliations. The rebel Angèle is looking for a husband in order to convince the judge to give back her son, Tony is seeking for a woman to truly love. She is running fast, he wants to savour the pleasure of knowing each other. Two opposite characters, reserved, always on the verge of a verbal and even physical crush.
Nevertheless they are able to slowly learn how to understand each other. A man and a woman, full of deep humanity, rived by a mourning – the distance of the son, the death of the father – that they are desperately trying to overcome, keeping hold mutually.
The director captures their progressive approaching, revealing the small acts of an opening to the other – hints of smiles, unexpected shynesses. However "Angèle and Tony" is not only a love story, but also the portrait of an area of France, the Low Normandy, binds to the fishing and that is actually paying for the economic crisis. The daily needs of the main characters merge into this social context, which is integral part of and not less fundamental than the story itself. In this way, even though the core of the story lies in emotional and existential events, the film does not forget to show also the hard life of the fishermen, forced to risk a reporting as they carry on industrial actions aiming at the increase of the community quota for the fish. A reality shot with a direct and essential language that rightfully put Angèle and Tony in that French cinema wave able to link the observation of the real with the analysis of the sentiments.

Normandy. Angèle is a young woman falling apart. She is leaving jail after being held responsible for the accident that caused her husband’s death and now she cannot personally take care of her son, assigned by the judges to the paternal grandparents. Tony is a fisherman used to sacrifices who lives with her widowed mother, after his father disappeared while he was fishing on the high seas. They are both looking for a relation – Angèle desperately wants to form a family in order to take back his son, Tony seeks to escape from the emotional solitude where he is trapped in – and so they meet thanks to a personal ad. Their first rendezvous is not the most positive one...

Director’s Note
"I wanted to tell a love story. Filming it among people I know well, Normandy fishermen, became obvious for me. If I were born in the United States, I would have made a western movie. Fishermen as cowboys, the sea as the great plains. Nature imposing raw sentiments. Few words, primal emotions, that is what I was looking for when I made this movie".

Alix Delaporte, scriptwriter and director, has made her debut in 2003 with the short film La Piège. She wrote the screenplays for two famous TV series "Léa Parker" (2003) and "Plus belle la vie" (2004). As a director, she directed the documentary "Zinedine Zidane, comme dans un rêve" (2001). In 2006 she won the Golden Lion for Best Short Film at the Venice Film Festival for "Comment on freine dans una descente?". "Angèle et Tony" is her debut feature film.
